Matariki is all about reflection, connection and resetting for the year ahead ☆

Matariki is the Māori New Year, marked by the rising of the Matariki star cluster.

As the Matariki Festival website says, this time is all about coming together with whānau to acknowledge the year gone by, plan for the future, and celebrate the present with kai, kōrero, ceremony and entertainment.

Not sure how to celebrate Matariki this weekend? We’ve got you covered...

Reflect on the past year

Matariki is a time to pause and think about what’s been the highs, the lows, and what you’ve learned and how you've grown.

Remember loved ones

One of the most important traditions of Matariki is honouring those who have passed you might light a candle, share stories, or simply take a quiet moment to think of them.

Set intentions for the year ahead

Think New Year energy, just a bit more meaningful. Goals, vibes, mindset resets, how to become the best version of yourself.

Share kai with your people

Food is a huge part of Matariki. Whether it’s a big whānau dinner, takeaway with your flatmates, or hitting a market it’s about coming together.

Get up for sunrise

If you can get up for sunrise this is one of the most beautiful ways to take part in celebrations for this Matariki. Traditionally, people look to the sky to see the Matariki stars at dawn it’s a moment of connection and reflection to start the new year. Find a maunga (mountain) near you for the best view.
