Charged with an electrifying fusion of pop and rock, Ōtautahi pop-rock band Castaway bring a captivating high-energy show to any stage they come across. The band met in their first year at university, as fate brought the 5 boys from all across the country to the same hall of residence.
Years on, the band lives and breathes music from their flat in Ōtautahi. When they aren’t chasing each other up for not unloading the dishwasher or sharing a delicious meal at the dinner table, they are hard at work writing songs about connection, love, and growing up.
Theme
‘Nondual’ is an idea that was first floated by bass player, Austen. At its core, Nondualism is about everything being connected – people, places, ideas. “I learned about it in a philosophy class and it really grabbed me. I told the boys about it and from that day, we had a guiding light for our songwriting” says Austen.
The idea of connection resonated instantly, as the tight-knit unit of mates and bandmates bound together on their journey from youth into young adulthood. The boys brought their emotions of grief and loss, experiences of long distance and missing loved ones, and their signature blend of pop and rock to the table. The output, after working with the legendary Greg Haver and Will McGillivray, is an EP that’s got rough hard-hitting edges and a soft, touching core.
The idea of connection that is infused into the 6 songs of the EP now takes on a different meaning. Castaway are set to connect with the people of Aotearoa and make deep relationships with New Zealanders right up and down the country as their maiden tour comes to life. The Nondual EP tour, and the connections they will make with fans old and new, is their embodiment of the EP’s message.
Sound
Combining the anthemic prowess of Coldplay and The Killers with the pop sensibilities of Harry Styles and Niall Horan, Nondual is full of catchy songs that pack a punch. As the boys have explored the limits of their creativity and their unity as a band, their songs have become bigger and more dynamic, creating a powerful experience for listeners and show attendees alike.
