Aotearoa's biggest band SIX60 have officially kicked off Waiata Anthem week celebrations with the release of the new song 'Pepeha'.

The boys from 660 Castle Street are back, and this time to celebrate a massive week in the NZ Music calendar.

'Pepeha' is the bands first ever bilingual waiata featuring both English and Te Reo Māori lyrics.

Following on from Kia Mau Ki Tō Ūkaipō / Don't Forget your Roots which featured in last years Waita Anthem compilation album, Pepeha is the first song to be released celebrating Waiata Anthem week 2021 which runs from 6th-12th September.

A pepeha shows our connection to the physical and spiritual place we call home. This anthemic waiata links significant things – prestige, love, and family – with our environment and to our ancestors.

Ko Mana tōku maunga

Mana is my mountain

Ko Aroha te moana

Aroha is my sea

Ko Whānau tōku waka

Whānau is my waka

Ko au e tū atu nei

And all of that is me.

Talking about the new song, SIX60's lead singer Matiu Walters says "I wanted to try to write a pepeha for all New Zealanders, whether you were born here, or you moved here and decided to make Aotearoa your home."
