Congratulations are in order for Sam Smith, who has officially confirmed they're engaged to longtime partner Christian Cowan 🥹

The 34-year-old singer, who has been dating the fashion designer since 2022, confirmed recent reports that wedding bells are on the horizon and revealed they're in a particularly happy chapter of life.

Speaking to the New York Times, Sam said: "I feel good, I feel happy."

Their relationship has played a major role in shaping their upcoming fifth studio album, Hazel Eyes, although Sam admitted that even during life's happiest moments, complex emotions still surface.

"I feel all types of things all the time. In my happiest moments, I can get really sad," they explained.

The 'Unholy' singer believes creating music about love as a queer artist feels especially meaningful in today's world.

"For me, there's something radical about being queer in this time, in this world, and singing love songs," Sam said.

"I'm not going to allow the poison that I read and that I see to affect my way of loving."

Alongside their flourishing relationship, Sam has also embraced a new life in New York City after relocating from the UK.

"Being in New York, I'm not the only freak on the street," they joked.

"I'm surrounded daily by people that are too much. And I mean too much as a compliment."

Despite being one of the world's biggest pop stars, Sam admitted performing is still something they find challenging because singing feels so personal.

"I really struggle. Singing for me is an incredibly personal thing. You don't hear me singing unless I have to."

To overcome nerves before stepping on stage, Sam said they put everything into perspective by reminding themselves how small they are compared to the vastness of the universe.

"How big the world is, how high the moon is. How small I am, and how small this room is that I'm performing in, even if it's an arena."

The engagement news comes shortly after Sam opened up about wanting children in the future, revealing they're feeling increasingly "maternal" as they get older.

Discussing their recent single Oh Mother, Sam said the song helped them connect with themes of protection, family and growing up.

"As I'm getting older I feel like I'm becoming more maternal and more definitely hungry one day to have children myself and things like that."

With a new album on the way and wedding plans reportedly in motion, it sounds like an exciting new era is beginning for Sam.
