Has it seriously been three years since GUTS?

Olivia Rodrigo is finally back with her highly anticipated third album, You Seem Pretty Sad for a Girl So in Love, set for release on June 12th. It’s been three years since her last full-length project, GUTS, with only a cover of The Cure’s Friday I’m in Love keeping fans satiated in the meantime.

Early hints about the album’s tone have already emerged. In a handwritten note shared via Universal Music Group's presale newsletter, Olivia wrote, “No matter how hard I try to write love songs, they always come out laced a little melancholy.”

The confession sets the stage for an introspective collection of songs that explore the highs, lows, and messy truths of young love.

The album art adds another layer to that story. The main cover shows Olivia in a pink dress on a swing, echoing Jean-Honoré Fragonard’s 18th-century painting The Swing - an image known for the societal pressures of love.

Interestingly, her speculated partner Louis Partridge (who she has neither confirmed nor denied a breakup with) recently shared the image of the painting on his Instagram, adding another layer of intrigue to the cover.

The Target-exclusive vinyl and CD covers also takes the artistic reference further. Olivia is pictured carving the album title into a tree trunk, similar to Jean-Honoré Fragonard’s The Souvenir, which itself was inspired by Jean-Jacques Rousseau’s epistolary novel Julie.

Written entirely as letters, the novel explores love, longing, and the personal sacrifices people make for society’s approval. By invoking this imagery, Olivia frames her album as a series of intimate “letters” to listeners, each song revealing personal emotions, vulnerabilities, and reflections on growing up.

Rumours also suggest indie singer-songwriter Phoebe Bridgers (whom also happens to have a cover of Friday I'm in Love) may have co-written two tracks, strengthening the album’s emotional and musical depth.

Meanwhile, Dan Nigro returns as producer, bringing the blend of polished pop and raw, confessional songwriting that defined Olivia’s earlier work.

A Spotify countdown also confirms the album will feature 13 tracks, and Olivia has already teased the first single with cryptic Instagram images of locks placed around the world, captioned “Drop Dead April 17th.”

With just over two months until release, You Seem Pretty Sad for a Girl So in Love promises to be another defining chapter in Olivia Rodrigo’s career, an intimate, confessional journey through love, melancholy, and self-discovery.
