Donkey is finally getting his main character moment 🫏💚

DreamWorks has confirmed the fan-favourite sidekick is stepping out of Shrek’s shadow for his own standalone film, with Eddie Murphy returning to voice the iconic character.

The film, titled Donkey!, is set to hit cinemas on June 30, 2028, and will dive into Donkey’s origin story aka how he became the non-stop talking, chaos-loving bestie we met in Shrek 👀

This news dropped only a week since we got a glimpse at the new animation style for Shrek 5...

The announcement comes just ahead of Shrek 5, which is due out in 2027 and will reunite the OG cast, including Mike Myers, Cameron Diaz and Eddie Murphy. Oh, and Zendaya is officially joining the sequel too.

Behind the scenes, Donkey! will be directed by Charlie Bean (The Lego Batman Movie), with production from Rebecca Huntley (Kung Fu Panda 4, The Bad Guys). DreamWorks artist Matt Flynn is also on board as co-director.

The Shrek franchise has been absolutely unstoppable since the first film dropped back in 2001, earning nearly $500 million worldwide and even taking out the very first Oscar for Best Animated Feature.

Since then, it’s turned into a $3 billion+ global franchise, with multiple sequels and spin-offs (yes, we’re still obsessed with Puss in Boots).

Now, after more than 20 years of being Shrek’s ride-or-die, Donkey is finally taking centre stage for his own story… and honestly, we’re so here for it.
