It's a massive win for all in Aotearoa!

New Zealand has officially passed the bill to ban conversion therapy

Conversion “therapy” refers to the practice, often by religious groups, of trying to “cure” people of their sexuality, gender expression or LGBTQ+ identity.

The law, which makes it a criminal offence to attempt to change or suppress a person’s sexual orientation or gender identity through harmful therapy practices, was passed yesterday evening, with all but eight National MPs voting for it.

The justice select committee received nearly 107,000 public submissions on the law – the highest number of public submissions received on a piece of legislation in New Zealand.

Speaking to the house, the deputy prime minister, Grant Robertson, said the law would right some of the wrongs caused by conversion practices.

“I grew up in a religious churchgoing household in the era of homosexual law reform,” he said. “When I finally gathered the courage to come out to my parents, I was met with love … but not everyone is or was so lucky."

Go New Zealand! We've done so so so good! 🌈
